How To Replace The Rotary Starter Switch On Your Dryer?

Today I am writing the instructions for you on how you would go about changing the Rotary Start Switch on your clothes dryer at home.  For this example, I will be using a particular switch that is associated with any GE manufactured brands which would include Hotpoint, General Electric and Kenmore.  So if you have anyone of these brands, then this instruction will be exactly what you are looking for, if you have another brand then it may vary slightly.

So how would you know if you have a bad Rotary Start Switch?  Well your dryer would be getting any of the following signs:

  • You notice that the switch will have a broken plastic shaft
  • Your dryer will not start

Steps to help you repair dryer starter switch problem:

  1. Disconnect the power to your appliance
  2. Press the little locking tab
  3. Get the new rotary switch
  4. Put the switch into the opening
  5. Place the knob back

Now let us get into what you can do to change the switch so that you can solve your home appliance problem. The only tool that is needed for this repair is a Phillips screw driver, that should give you some indication that this is a pretty simple job, if you guessed it, then you are absolutely right.

Ok so before we start this dryer repair, you should first disconnect the power to your appliance, which would either be simply plugging it out or if it is hardwired then you will need to turn the electric breaker off.

Now get your screw driver and start the process of removing the 4 screws that are located on the console towards the top section. Once they are removed, you will now want to tilt the console forward and then slightly lift it up towards the ceiling, what this will do is expose the back side of the starter switch.

You are going to need to press the little locking tab that is made of metal, then in a counter clockwise motion you will want to turn the switch from the back, then go ahead and pull the knob off of the switch, you can now proceed to disconnect the starter switch. You should see 2 wires located on the switch, go ahead and start removing these wires.

Now get the new rotary switch and secure those same 2 wires that you just took off the old switch and put it on the new one and you will want to make sure that you put them back in the same position, do not miss this step up.

Once those wires are secured, then proceed to put the switch into the opening, now it’s time to install this, you will need to turn it in a clockwise motion until you hear it snapping into place. Now you will tilt the console back into place and with your screw driver you can put back the 4 screws.

Place the knob back on but be sure that the metal retainer is still on the inner section of the knob, as sometimes it may get stuck to the old starter switch.

Your repair is pretty much complete; all you need to do at this point is to reconnect the power for your appliance.  How easy was that?  I am sure you will agree it was pretty easy, I hope you found this information useful and until next time, enjoy your day and visit this link if you need more information The Appliance Experts.
