Appliances rarely fail in exactly the same way.

A refrigerator that stops cooling may have a completely different failure from the refrigerator next door. A washer that won’t spin could have an electrical problem, a mechanical failure, or something as simple as an obstruction interfering with normal operation.

During the first half of 2026, The Appliance Experts completed 134 appliance service calls across Broward County, Florida.

For the 2026 Mid-Year Broward County Appliance Failure Report™, we analyzed those completed service calls to identify patterns in:

  • the appliances requiring service
  • the problems homeowners experienced
  • the components technicians diagnosed
  • the types of failures encountered
  • repair and replacement outcomes
  • the Broward County communities represented in the service data

The result is a field-based look at what appliance technicians are actually encountering inside Broward County homes.

Unlike a consumer survey or manufacturer reliability study, this report is based on real appliance service events documented during technician visits.


Executive Summary

 

The 2026 Mid-Year Broward County Appliance Failure Report™ analyzed 134 completed appliance service calls from January 1 through June 30, 2026.

The service calls represented homes across 19 Broward County municipalities, including Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach, Hollywood, Coconut Creek, Tamarac, Parkland, Sunrise, Plantation and surrounding communities.

Several patterns emerged from the service data.

Refrigerators, Washers and Dryers Generated a Large Share of Service Activity

 

Major household appliances accounted for much of the documented service activity, with refrigerators, washing machines and dryers appearing prominently in the service records.

The failures behind those calls varied considerably.

Some appliances suffered relatively contained component failures that could be repaired. Others required major components, multiple repairs, unavailable parts, or conditions that made replacement the more practical recommendation.

Similar Symptoms Often Had Different Causes

 

One of the clearest findings from the service records was that the symptom reported by the homeowner did not reliably identify the failed component.

A washer that would not operate normally could involve a switch, motor system, belt, drain system, control component or even a foreign object interfering with moving parts.

A refrigerator cooling complaint could involve fans, controls, airflow components, sealed-system components or other failures.

A dryer experiencing poor performance could involve its heating system, thermal components, airflow, electrical supply or controls.

This makes professional diagnosis important before deciding whether an appliance needs a particular part, or needs to be replaced.

Small Components Can Disable Large Appliances

 

Not every appliance failure involved a major component.

The H1 service records included failures involving switches, latches, relays, valves, fans, heating components, pumps, controls and other individual parts capable of preventing an otherwise functional appliance from operating normally.

In some cases, identifying and replacing a targeted component returned the appliance to service without replacement.

Some Service Events Involved Multiple Problems

 

The data also showed why counting only service calls can understate what technicians encounter in the field.

A single service event can uncover more than one failed or compromised component.

For that reason, this report distinguishes where appropriate between an appliance service event and the individual failure components identified during that event.

Diagnosis Influences the Repair-vs.-Replacement Decision

 

The service data reinforces an important principle:

An appliance symptom alone doesn’t determine whether repair or replacement makes sense.

The failed component, appliance condition, parts availability, repair cost, previous repair history and replacement cost can all affect that decision.

About the Data

 

This report is based on service records from 134 completed appliance service calls performed within Broward County between January 1 and June 30, 2026.

Service locations represented 19 Broward County municipalities.

The underlying service records include technician notes, service locations, diagnoses, repairs and other job information recorded during appliance-service activity.

A subset of service events has also been documented in greater detail through The Appliance Experts’ Verified Repair Reports™, which capture structured information such as appliance category, brand, reported symptom, failed component, failure category, repair performed and service outcome.

For example, Verified Repair Report™ RR0030 documents a Whirlpool electric dryer in Coconut Creek with a diagnosed heating-element failure. The element was replaced and the dryer returned to service; the customer subsequently reported that the dryer was fixed in less than an hour.

Important Methodology Note

 

The data in this report represents The Appliance Experts’ completed service calls and should not be interpreted as a measurement of the overall failure rate of appliances throughout Broward County.

For example, a brand appearing frequently in service records does not necessarily mean that brand is less reliable than another brand.

The number of appliances of each brand currently installed in Broward County is unknown, as are factors such as appliance age, usage patterns and local market share.

Similarly, geographic service-call totals reflect The Appliance Experts’ customer and service footprint and should not be interpreted to mean appliances fail more frequently in one Broward municipality than another.

The purpose of this report is different:

To identify and document patterns within actual appliance service events handled during the reporting period.


Which Appliances Required the Most Service?

 

Appliance problems were not distributed evenly across the 134 completed Broward County service calls analyzed for this report.

After reviewing and classifying the technician’s service records, refrigeration appliances, washers and dryers emerged as the three largest service categories during the first half of 2026.

These three categories accounted for the majority of the appliance service activity represented in the dataset.

Refrigeration Led the Service Mix

 

Refrigerators and related refrigeration equipment represented the largest individual appliance category in the first-half service data.

That category includes traditional refrigerators as well as service involving freezers and ice-making systems where those systems were part of the refrigeration appliance.

The prominence of refrigeration service is significant because a refrigerator failure can become urgent quickly. Unlike some appliance problems that homeowners can temporarily work around, a refrigerator that stops cooling can put food at risk and often requires relatively quick diagnosis.

But the underlying causes varied considerably.

A refrigerator that is “not cooling,” for example, did not necessarily mean that the compressor had failed. The service records included problems involving fans, dampers, controls, ice-making components and other parts of the refrigeration system.

That distinction will become important later in this report when we examine what actually failed inside the appliances.

Laundry Equipment Was Another Major Source of Service

 

Washers and dryers together represented a substantial portion of the completed service calls.

And again, similar symptoms did not always lead to similar diagnoses.

Washer service records included issues involving drainage, switches, belts, motors, suspension components and other mechanical or electrical systems.

One particularly illustrative service call involved clothing becoming caught in the washer’s moving components. The obstruction caused the belt to come off, requiring the technician to remove the clothing and reassemble the washer motor and belt system.

Dryer problems likewise ranged from heating-system failures to controls and other electrical or mechanical components. RR0030, for example, documents a Whirlpool electric dryer in Coconut Creek where diagnosis identified a failed heating element; replacing it returned the dryer to service.

The customer’s subsequent review reported that the dryer was fixed in less than an hour, providing an example of a failure that could be diagnosed and repaired rather than requiring appliance replacement.

Cooking Appliances, Dishwashers and Microwaves Were Smaller — But Still Important

 

Ranges, ovens, cooktops, dishwashers and microwaves represented smaller portions of the overall service mix, but some of these calls produced among the more interesting diagnoses in the dataset.

For example, one documented Whirlpool range required replacement of both an infinite switch and burner assembly before normal operation was restored.

Other cooking-appliance cases involved electronic control failures, including a Whirlpool range where repeated board problems were ultimately associated with a pest infestation rather than ordinary component wear.

Dishwasher problems included drainage, cleaning, drying and electrical issues. Some were repairable component failures; others involved circumstances where repair was no longer practical. One documented Whirlpool dishwasher, for example, had extensive rodent damage to multiple wires and connectors, leading to a replacement recommendation rather than an uneconomical repair attempt.

What This Does, and Doesn’t Tell Us

 

These results represent completed appliance service calls handled by The Appliance Experts across Broward County during the first half of 2026.

The data shows which appliance categories appeared most frequently within the service calls analyzed. It does not measure the total number of each type of appliance installed in Broward County.

Therefore, the results should not be interpreted to mean that one appliance category is inherently more likely to fail than another.

What the data does show is that among the 134 completed Broward County appliance service calls analyzed, refrigeration and laundry equipment generated the greatest share of documented service activity.

Report Takeaway

 

Refrigerators, washers and dryers formed the core of Broward County appliance service demand represented in the H1 2026 dataset. But the service records also show why appliance type alone tells only part of the story: similar homeowner complaints frequently led technicians to very different underlying failures.


What Was Actually Breaking? The Most Common Appliance Failure Families

 

Looking beyond appliance type, the service records revealed a wide range of electrical, mechanical, cooling, heating, water-management and component-level problems.

A single symptom did not necessarily point to a single type of failure. For example, a refrigerator cooling complaint could ultimately involve an evaporator fan, damper, compressor, defrost component or control board. Likewise, a washer that would not complete a cycle could involve a drain pump, door or lid switch, suspension system, control board or drive component.

For that reason, the failure-family analysis counts documented failure conditions within service calls. A service call involving multiple documented problems can appear in more than one failure family.

Important: Failure categories are not mutually exclusive. A single service call may include more than one documented failure, so category totals and percentages should not be added together to calculate a share of the 134 service calls.

Water and Ice Systems Appeared Repeatedly

 

The largest recurring family involved ice makers, water valves, fill systems and related water-delivery components.

These weren’t all identical failures. The records included ice makers that stopped producing ice, ice makers that overflowed, frozen fill tubes, water valves and other components involved in moving water through refrigerators and other appliances.

This distinction is important: a homeowner may experience the symptom simply as “the ice maker isn’t working,” while the actual failure can originate elsewhere in the system.

Cooling Problems Had Many Different Causes

 

Cooling-related calls were also prominent, but “not cooling” was not itself a diagnosis.

The service records documented problems involving components such as compressors, evaporator fans, dampers, defrost systems and refrigerant-related conditions.

That pattern is also visible in the Verified Repair Report™ database. For example, one documented Whirlpool refrigerator had a warm fresh-food compartment while the freezer remained cold.

Diagnosis identified the electronic damper assembly, not the compressor as the failed component, and replacing the damper restored normal cooling.

This illustrates an important finding from the service data:

Similar symptoms can have very different underlying causes.

A refrigerator that is not cooling properly does not automatically have a failed compressor.

Electronic Controls Were a Significant Failure Family

 

Electronic controls and circuit boards appeared in 17 of the 134 service calls.

The records included main control boards, relay boards and other electronic control failures across several appliance categories.

And occasionally the failed board wasn’t the real root cause.

One documented Whirlpool range experienced repeated control-board trouble before the technician discovered an active cockroach infestation inside the appliance. The appliance was kept powered off until pest treatment was completed because simply replacing electronic components without correcting the underlying condition could have resulted in another failure.

That case demonstrates another pattern worth highlighting:

The failed component and the root cause of the failure are not always the same thing.

Pumps and Drainage Problems Crossed Appliance Categories

 

Drainage and pump-related conditions appeared in 14 service calls.

These weren’t limited to washing machines. Drain pumps, blocked drains, drain hoses and related water-removal problems appeared across washers and dishwashers.

That matters from a diagnostic perspective because “not draining” describes the homeowner’s symptom, not necessarily the component that needs replacement.

Some service calls were resolved by correcting a restriction or installation issue, while others required an actual pump or related component replacement.

Mechanical Failures Were Often Repairable

 

Another 14 calls contained drive, motor or suspension-related conditions, including belts, suspension components, couplings, pulleys and motor-related problems.

One washer service call from the first half of 2026 provides a particularly useful example. Clothing had become caught around the motor area and knocked the drive belt out of position. The technician removed the foreign material, reassembled the motor and belt system, and restored the washer without replacing the appliance.

That’s exactly the kind of case that supports one of the larger themes emerging from this report:

An appliance that stops working may not have suffered a catastrophic failure.

Diagnosis determines whether the problem requires a major component, a relatively small part, an adjustment or sometimes simply removal of an obstruction.

Door, Latch and Switch Failures Were More Common Than They May Seem

 

Door, latch and switch-related conditions appeared in 13 calls.

These components can look relatively insignificant compared with a compressor, motor or electronic control board, yet a failed safety switch or latch can prevent an otherwise functional appliance from operating.

That included washer lid/door switches, microwave door components and other interlock-related problems.

These failures are another example of why the severity of the symptom doesn’t necessarily indicate the severity of the repair.

Heating Failures Crossed Dryers, Ranges and Microwaves

 

Heating-system components appeared in 12 calls.

The records included heating elements, bake elements, magnetrons, capacitors, diodes, fuses, igniters and related components.

RR0030 provides a clean example: a Whirlpool electric dryer in Coconut Creek was diagnosed with a failed heating element. The element was replaced and the dryer returned to service; the customer’s subsequent review reported that the dryer had been fixed in less than an hour.

But even here, the symptom alone wasn’t enough. A dryer that tumbles without heating can potentially have problems involving the heating element, thermal protection components, wiring, electrical supply or controls.

The Bigger Finding: Symptoms Are Not Diagnoses

 

This may be the most useful takeaway from the failure-family analysis.

Homeowners experience symptoms:

“It’s not cooling.”

“It’s not draining.”

“The dryer isn’t heating.”

“The microwave is dead.”

“The washer won’t spin.”

But the 134 service calls show that those symptoms can lead technicians in very different directions.

A completely non-operational appliance can sometimes have a relatively targeted component failure. Conversely, what initially appears to be a straightforward repair can reveal multiple failed components, unavailable parts or an underlying condition that makes replacement the better decision.

One Verified Repair Report™ illustrates the latter particularly well: a Dacor built-in microwave that would not operate was ultimately found to have a failed electronic control board, blown fuse, damaged power cord and broken door latch. Because the necessary replacement parts were no longer available, appliance replacement was recommended instead of repair.

What the Data Suggests

 

The first-half service records don’t point to one dominant component responsible for appliance breakdowns.

Instead, they reveal a much broader pattern:

Modern appliance failures are distributed across electronic controls, water systems, mechanical components, heating systems, cooling systems, switches, sensors and external conditions.

That makes professional diagnosis important not merely for identifying what broke, but for answering the more consequential question:

Is this appliance worth repairing?


Repair or Replace? What the Service Data Revealed

 

One of the most important questions after an appliance failure is also one of the most difficult to answer without a proper diagnosis:

Should the appliance be repaired, or is it time to replace it?

The service data reviewed for the 2026 Mid-Year Broward County Appliance Failure Report™ shows why the answer cannot reliably be determined from the symptom alone.

Two appliances can present with very similar symptoms while requiring very different decisions.

A dryer that stops heating, for example, could have a repairable heating-system component failure. A refrigerator that stops cooling could have anything from a relatively contained fan, sensor or control problem to a major sealed-system or compressor issue.

The same principle appeared repeatedly across the service records:

The symptom tells you what the appliance is doing.

The diagnosis tells you whether repairing it makes sense.

Many Appliance Failures Were Component-Level Problems

 

A recurring pattern in the service data was that an appliance could appear seriously disabled even though the underlying problem involved an individual replaceable component.

The documented service calls included failures involving components such as:

  • Heating elements
  • Thermal fuses and thermostats
  • Door and lid switches
  • Drain pumps
  • Water valves
  • Fans and fan assemblies
  • Burner controls and infinite switches
  • Control boards and relays
  • Motors and belts
  • Latches and door components

In many cases, identifying and replacing the failed component allowed the appliance to remain in service rather than requiring replacement.

One documented Coconut Creek case illustrates the point particularly well. A Whirlpool electric dryer required a heating-element replacement. After diagnosis, the element was replaced and the dryer returned to service; the customer subsequently reported that the dryer had been fixed in less than an hour.

A failed heating element can therefore produce a completely nonfunctional drying result without necessarily making the entire dryer economically obsolete. The RR0030 case specifically notes that appliance age, condition, repair history, repair cost and comparable replacement cost should all factor into the decision.

Other Failures Changed the Economics

 

Not every diagnosed appliance was a good candidate for repair.

The service records also contained cases involving more substantial failures, unavailable parts, multiple failed components, and situations where the expected repair cost or condition of the appliance made replacement the more practical recommendation.

This is an important distinction:

“Repairable” and “worth repairing” are not necessarily the same thing.

A technician may be able to identify exactly what failed and still conclude that replacing the appliance is the better economic decision.

Factors that can influence that decision include:

Appliance age. A substantial repair can make more sense on a newer appliance than on an appliance already approaching the end of its useful life.

Overall condition. One failed component on an otherwise well-performing appliance presents a different decision from a unit experiencing multiple problems.

Cost of the repair. Parts and labor have to be weighed against the cost of a suitable replacement.

Parts availability. A technically repairable appliance can become impractical to repair when necessary components are discontinued or unavailable.

Consider two identical refrigerators that both need a $400 repair.

Refrigerator A has never required a significant repair.

Refrigerator B has already received $700 in repairs during the previous two years.

The current diagnosis may be identical, but the economic decision isn’t necessarily identical.

That’s why appliance service history has value beyond simply documenting the most recent repair.

For an individual homeowner, that history can help answer:

“How much money have I already put into this appliance?”

Diagnosis Before Replacement

 

The service data supports a simple practical lesson for Broward County homeowners:

A broken appliance isn’t automatically a worn-out appliance.

The Symptom Is Not the Diagnosis

 

Two appliances can show nearly identical symptoms while requiring very different repairs.

A dryer that runs without producing heat, for example, could have a failed heating element, thermostat, thermal protection component, electrical-supply problem, wiring issue or another fault.

One documented Coconut Creek service call illustrates this clearly. A Whirlpool electric dryer required a heating-element replacement, and after diagnosis and repair the appliance was returned to service.

The lesson is simple:

Avoid making a repair-or-replace decision based solely on the symptom.

Proper diagnosis can identify whether the problem involves a relatively targeted component or a more significant failure.

A Failed Component Does Not Always Mean a Failed Appliance

 

The service calls analyzed during the first half of 2026 included failures involving switches, heating components, pumps, fans, control boards, door-related components and other individual parts.

In many cases, repairing the failed component allowed the appliance to remain in service.

Perhaps the most useful takeaway from the first half of 2026 is that there is no single rule for appliance repair.

Not every refrigerator that stops cooling needs replacement.

Not every washer that stops spinning has the same failed part.

Not every dryer that stops heating needs a heating element.

And not every repair that is technically possible is financially worthwhile.

The best decisions begin with identifying what actually failed, understanding the condition and history of the appliance, and then comparing the repair with the realistic alternative.

Appliance Problems Are Also Coordination Problems

 

When a tenant reports that a refrigerator isn’t cooling or a dryer isn’t heating, diagnosing and repairing the appliance is only part of the work.

Someone may also need to:

  • Contact and schedule a service provider
  • Coordinate access with the resident

One appliance failure may require only a handful of communications.
